How to play

Connect four red discs horizontally, vertically, or diagonally before the computer connects four yellow discs.

  • Choose a column with an open space to drop your red disc.
  • The disc falls to the lowest empty cell and the computer then plays yellow.
  • Build an unbroken line of four before the grid fills.

Strategy tips

  • Control the center columns because they support more lines.
  • Block an immediate group of three before starting another plan.
  • Watch both diagonal directions as the lower rows fill.

Complete guide

Rules, scoring, and strategy

Connect Four is a seven-column, six-row alignment game against a deterministic local opponent. You drop red discs and the browser replies with yellow discs.

Gravity and the seven legal columns

Choose a column and the disc falls into its lowest empty cell. A full column cannot accept another disc, and pieces never move after landing. Turns alternate until one player connects four or all forty-two cells are filled without a winning line.

Four directions can decide a match

A winning line may run horizontally, vertically, diagonally upward, or diagonally downward. The result is checked after every drop and play stops immediately when a line appears. Scan beyond obvious rows because a new support disc can complete a diagonal several columns away.

What the local opponent prioritizes

The browser takes a winning move whenever one exists and otherwise blocks an immediate red win. It then prefers columns nearer the center, which participate in more possible lines. The choice is deterministic and runs entirely in the page without a server or remote player. Undo returns to the position before your previous disc and the computer reply so you can compare another column.

Build threats with safe support

A promising empty cell matters only when the cells beneath it can be filled without giving yellow an earlier win. Center control produces more horizontal and diagonal options, but careless stacking can hand the opponent the exact support it needs. Compare both players' next drops before committing.

Questions players ask

How large is the Connect Four board here?

The board has the standard seven columns and six rows, with discs falling to the lowest open cell in a chosen column.

Do diagonal groups of four count as a win?

Yes. Horizontal, vertical, rising diagonal, and falling diagonal lines all end the match as soon as four connected discs appear.

Does Connect Four send moves to a server?

No. The board rules and deterministic opponent run locally in your browser, and this game does not require an account or network opponent.
