How to play

Create a 2048 tile while keeping at least one legal slide available.

  • Use the arrow keys, WASD, or direction buttons to slide every tile.
  • Two equal tiles that meet merge once and add their value to your score.
  • Keep combining tiles until you reach 2048 or the board has no legal move.

Strategy tips

  • Keep your highest tile in one corner.
  • Build an ordered edge instead of scattering large values.
  • Avoid moves that fill the last empty spaces without a possible merge.

Complete guide

Rules, scoring, and strategy

2048 is a four-by-four sliding number puzzle where every move shifts the whole board. Equal tiles merge in pairs, and careful edge control matters more than rapid swiping.

How every board move works

Choose up, down, left, or right with the keyboard or the on-screen controls. Every tile travels as far as it can in that direction. When two equal values meet they merge once for that move, add their value to the score, and make room for one new low tile.

The target and the true ending

Creating a 2048 tile reaches the named goal and ends the round as a win in this version. The other ending occurs when all sixteen cells are occupied and no horizontal or vertical neighbors have matching values. Empty cells alone do not guarantee a useful plan.

Build a stable high-value corner

Choose one corner for the largest tile and keep the neighboring edge ordered from large to small. Repeatedly moving away from that corner can pull the anchor into the middle, where small tiles surround it and prevent the next merge. Use the other rows as temporary workspace.

Read the next merge before sliding

A tile can merge only once during a single move, so four equal tiles become two doubled tiles rather than one tile four times larger. Before moving, follow the complete row after compression and merging. Prefer moves that create both a merge and an empty cell while preserving the ordered edge.

Questions players ask

Can one tile merge twice during the same slide?

No. A newly merged tile cannot merge again until a later move, which keeps rows such as 2, 2, 2, 2 predictable.

Does reaching 2048 immediately stop the game?

Yes. This version records the goal and ends the round when a 2048 tile first appears, so the result and move count remain unambiguous.

When is a full 2048 board actually over?

It is over only when the grid is full and no equal tiles touch horizontally or vertically, leaving no legal slide.
