How to play
You complete Breakthrough when one of your pawns reaches any square on the opponent's back rank or the opponent has no remaining legal position. The full Breakthrough position determines the outcome; visual shortcuts never replace the documented Breakthrough terminal rule.
- Breakthrough begins with two complete pawn lines for each side occupying the nearest two ranks of an eight-by-eight board. The Breakthrough deal identity and Dan Troyka Breakthrough rules v1 are stored together. Restarting Breakthrough reproduces this opening exactly.
- During Breakthrough, you advance one square straight into emptiness or one square diagonally forward into an enemy piece, with no backward or sideways move. The Breakthrough engine rejects profile violations, unavailable material, and every action attempted after Breakthrough reaches a terminal result.

Strategy tips
- A reliable Breakthrough plan is to build mutually protecting diagonals and create two separated promotion threats that cannot both be stopped by one defensive move. A Breakthrough hint is legal and deterministic. The next Breakthrough hint exposes one bounded action; it never claims a forced Breakthrough win.
- A costly Breakthrough mistake is to try to capture directly ahead or retreat from danger; straight movement never captures and every pawn direction is irreversible. Undo supports studying that Breakthrough decision, while restart preserves the original seeded Breakthrough opening.
- In the Breakthrough endgame, calculate forced promotion races by turn count and sacrifice a flank pawn only when it opens a faster protected runner. Check every remaining Breakthrough action before committing because its terminal rule is enforced immediately.
