How to play

Capture every opposing man or leave the opponent unable to make a legal move on their turn.

  • Each player occupies the two nearest rows plus alternating points of the middle row, leaving only the central point empty. Orthogonal lines and the marked diagonals define every legal step and jump.
  • If any capture exists, jump an adjacent enemy along a line to the empty point beyond and continue with that same man while further jumps remain. Without a capture, move one line forward or sideways; a man on the far base row can only capture.
  • Capture every opposing man or leave the opponent unable to make a legal move on their turn.

Strategy tips

  • Before choosing the first compulsory jump, trace the entire continuation because the landing point may force several more captures. Use sideways moves to support a front without exposing a long jumping lane.
  • Ordinary movement is not eight-way freedom: backward non-capturing steps are illegal, unmarked diagonals do not exist, and reaching the far base freezes normal movement.
  • A capture circuit may revisit an earlier empty landing, so follow the current man's actual jump options until none remain rather than stopping because its route crossed old ground.

Rules, scoring, and strategy

Alquerque is a complete browser implementation with its own versioned rules profile. Advance twelve men across a five-by-five line board where every available capture is compulsory and one piece may be forced through a long jump sequence.
