Mahjong Solitaire is a layered matching puzzle, not the four-player tile game. This compact ruleset uses 72 tiles in two rectangular layers: eighteen distinct faces appear four times each, and every removable pair must be identical.
A tile can be selected only when no tile covers it and at least one horizontal side is open. A tile blocked on both left and right cannot move, even if its symbol matches another visible tile. The board highlights only legal selections.
Every pair requires two identical symbols. This 72-tile set contains bamboo, circle, character, wind, and dragon faces; it does not include flower or season group-matching exceptions. Removing a pair exposes tiles beneath or opens a horizontal side.
