Card Pairs

Find every matching pair using as few turns as possible.

How to play

Find every matching pair using as few turns as possible.

  • Reveal one face-down card and remember its symbol.
  • Reveal a second card; matching cards remain open and unmatched cards turn back.
  • Continue until every pair has been found.

Strategy tips

  • Scan positions systematically instead of choosing the same unknown card twice.
  • When a known mate appears, match it before exploring another pair.
  • Use row and column positions to form reliable spatial memories.

Complete guide

Rules, scoring, and strategy

Card Pairs is a deterministic concentration game. Every symbol appears exactly twice, and the challenge is retaining reliable spatial information while revealing only two cards per turn.

A complete, fair layout

Each generated board contains exact pairs and is solvable because all cards remain accessible. Select one hidden card, then a second. A matching pair stays revealed; a mismatch turns back after it has been announced.

Moves and records

One completed two-card attempt counts as a turn. The board records turns and elapsed time separately, so a fast game does not conceal inefficient guessing. Daily and numbered boards reproduce the same symbol positions.

Build spatial memory

Name both the symbol and its row-column position when it appears. Scan in a consistent order so unknown areas remain clear. When the mate of a known card appears, complete that pair before revealing unrelated cards.

Why random guessing performs poorly

Repeatedly choosing isolated unknown cards creates information that is quickly forgotten. Systematic exploration reduces duplicate mistakes. Near the end, pause and recall known positions before turning another unknown card.

Questions players ask

Is every Card Pairs board solvable?

Yes. The generator creates exact pairs and places every card face down without inaccessible positions.

What counts as one move?

A turn is completed after two cards are selected, whether they match or turn back over.

Does a numbered game preserve the layout?

Yes. The same number and rules version recreate the same pair positions for replay and sharing.
