How to play

Move all cards onto four ascending and four descending same-suit foundations.

  • Build ascending foundations from Ace and descending foundations from King.
  • Move the top crescent card onto another pile when it is an adjacent same-suit rank; Ace and King are adjacent in the tableau.
  • Use at most three redeals, each rotating the bottom card of every pile to its top.

Strategy tips

  • Balance ascending and descending foundations so middle ranks keep an exit.
  • Inspect every pile top before using one of the three redeals.
  • Avoid sending a card past the point where its opposite foundation still needs it.

Complete guide

Rules, scoring, and strategy

Crescent surrounds eight central foundations with sixteen small piles. Four foundations rise from Ace and four descend from King, so successful play keeps both directions open around the middle ranks.

The sixteen crescent piles

Only the top card of each six-card outer pile is available. It may move onto a same-suit card exactly one rank higher or lower, and tableau sequences may turn the corner between Ace and King. Empty outer piles cannot be refilled. Central foundations never wrap and accept cards only in their assigned direction.

Opposing foundation directions

Ascending foundations build Ace through King, while descending foundations build King through Ace. A rank committed too far in one direction may be needed by the opposite foundation, so compare both destinations before moving.

Exactly three rotations

The game allows three redeals. Each redeal moves the bottom card of every pile to that pile's top; it does not shuffle or reverse the remaining cards. Scan all sixteen exposed cards first and rotate only when the newly exposed ranks support a planned route.

Manage the middle ranks

Sixes, Sevens, and Eights often determine whether the two foundation directions meet cleanly. Keep flexible middle cards in the crescent until their destination is clear, and avoid stacking a needed card beneath another card of the same suit without an exit.

Questions players ask

Why do some foundations build downward?

Crescent deliberately uses four Ace-up and four King-down foundations, creating two directions for every suit.

What does redeal do?

It moves the bottom card of each nontrivial outer pile to the top. The order of all other cards stays fixed, and only three redeals are available.

Can outer piles build in both directions?

Yes. Outer piles accept an adjacent rank of the same suit in either direction, including Ace on King and King on Ace. Foundations keep their fixed direction and do not wrap.
