Canfield combines a small tableau, a thirteen-card reserve, and foundations that begin at a randomly dealt base rank. The forced reserve refill and rank wrapping make its tempo different from Klondike.
One card establishes the starting rank for all four foundations. Foundations build upward by suit and wrap after King to Ace until each contains thirteen cards. Tableau columns build downward in alternating colors and also wrap between Ace and King.
Four tableau columns begin with one card each. When a column becomes empty and reserve cards remain, the top reserve card automatically fills that space. Only after the reserve is exhausted may a player choose what to place in an empty column.
Choose Draw 1 for direct access or Draw 3 for a more restrictive waste order. When the stock empties, recycle the waste without shuffling and continue from the same order. Before drawing again, compare the current waste card with the base rank and the exposed reserve card.
Emptying a column is not automatically progress: the reserve card that replaces it may be harder to move. Prefer empties that release a reserve card with an immediate alternating-color destination or foundation path, and keep foundation growth balanced around the wrapped ranks.
Canfield uses the first dealt foundation card as a shared base rank. Each suit then builds upward from that rank and wraps after King.
